All the hits in two CDs, on the video the great song which shares the name with the album, excellent.
"I will scream my lungs out till it fills this
room," Eddie Vedder proclaimed in 1993. The room filled up fast, but a
funny thing happened on the way to world domination: Instead of railing
against the demons in his head, Vedder took on Ticketmaster and MTV,
and Pearl Jam turned out increasingly graceful tunes that explored the
warmth in Vedder's handsome baritone.
Pearl Jam have spent much of this decade courting devotees with a series of live bootlegs, so Rearviewmirror
is a welcome concession to casual fans, rounding out the hits with
concert staples and non-album cuts. The rockers on the "Up Side" disc
sum up the band's continually evolving relationship with effects pedals
and emotional catharsis; the slower "Down Side" disc offers gold sounds
that are long on big choruses and well-worn sincerity. Dozens of
Nineties bands got rich ripping off Pearl Jam's basic sound, but none
learned to channel grand gestures like these guys, and none have done
such a fine job of growing up with their audience.

I began seriously listening to Pearl Jam in 2002 so I am an older new comer. This bands music is so rich with talent with some of the best guitar combinations that make listening to them a journey. I do not know the technical terms but I find my self listening to these songs on Rearviewmirror and all of their other CD's, over and over again so that I am able to grasp each layer of the music and every nuance. Eddie Vedder's lyrical style was a bit difficult to grab on to at first but once I began to know his style more and more I realized how beautiful and rich this man's heart must be to write such deeply human emotions and share them with us. It is little wonder why he then would want to protect his private life with such voracity. It has been an "experience" turning on to Pearl Jam. I agree that Rearvew-mirror is an excellent sampling of their more popular songs and those songs are an enticing invitation to join all of the others who listen to every song on every CD and just enjoy a fully rounded barage of talent and lyrics that tell stories. Deep stories. Stories that, in the end remind us all that love is all we really need in this life. Mr. Vedder need not feel any pressure to give his fans and the press anything else. It one takes time to understand what he is saying, he is giving us so much of himself already. This is one of the best bands I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. My only hope is to get to see them live one day.
